In the aftermath of October 7, some Israelis discovered an unexpected refuge: movement. Running, swimming, dancing, or simply walking became acts of survival.

Mental Health First Aid Israel incorporates physical activity into its training as a first-line intervention for distress. Exercise releases endorphins, regulates cortisol, and provides a sense of control when the world feels chaotic.

This doesn't mean everyone should train for a marathon. Even gentle stretching, a walk in the park, or ten minutes of deep breathing can interrupt the freeze response that trauma often induces.

The body holds trauma. Movement helps it let go.
